The first stage of the race starts at the top of the Pine Marten chair with a mad dash uphill to put on your skis. The skier wearing his/her helmet (helmet required) will pass through the SG gates to the exchange point by West Village Lodge.

The runner leaves the exchange point and heads towards the scenic running trail along the Deschutes River. After completing the 5 mile course the runner passes the lanyard to the canoe/kayak participant. There is a shorter run course of 5 km for the Under 12 Team category.

The cross-country skier can use the skate or classic techniques to ski around the parking lot and onto the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center's groomed trail system for 8 km. The change to cycling takes place in front of the Nordic Lodge parking area.

The boaters paddle upstream from put-in point for 1/2 mile on the Deschutes River to Healy Bridge then back downstream for 3/4 mile, then back upstream for 1/4 mile to the sprint exchange. Any float-worthy craft that does not have oarlocks is legal. Dress appropriate, the Deschutes River can be cold in the spring. Floatation devices are required.

The third stage is a beautiful ride into Bend along scenic Century Drive for 22 miles - the majority being a descent, except the one uphill stretch after the Sunriver junction. The biker then proceeds to Colorado Avenue for the next exchange point. Helmets are required and drafting is not allowed.

The final sprint along the grassy banks of the river to the Finish Arena from the Canoe/Kayak take-out, is approximately 1/3 mile in length. Cheer everyone on for the final leg!

  • Only individuals may have support crews. Individual support crews are not allowed to drive down the mountain (keep one crew member downtown and one at mountain). No support crew other than team member(s) for teams or pairs allowed.
  • Tandem bikes allowed in Tandem Pairs or Open Class categories only. Two person canoes allowed in all categories (except individual)
  • Two-person kayaks allowed in Tandem Pairs or Open Class categories only.
  • ANSI approved helmets are mandatory for the Alpine and Bike legs. You may wear the same helmet for both legs.
  • Approved personal floatation device(s) PFD must be worn during the canoe/kayak leg.
  • Bike fairings are allowed in Open Class Teams only
  • No oarlocks allowed in any class.
  • The Cross-Country leg may use classic or skating skis.
 
  • The course may change due to weather and snow conditions.
  • Runner must stay in town for 3-person teams, unless the runner is also the biker.
  • Course times range from 1:45 to over 4 hours.
 
ELITE CATEGORY:  Intended for highly competitive individuals competing for the Grand Prize.  Elite category participants will sacrifice age category. There is no age division in the male and female Elite categories. 

INDIVIDUALS:  Must complete all portions of race alone. May use support of TWO persons at each exchange point. May not receive aid on course or between exchanges. Support crews must wear support bib. (Keep one person in town for bike/run exchange).
PAIRS: (TWO PERSON TEAM)
One male and one female, two males, two females, or tandem pairs. Only tandem pairs may use tandem bikes and two person kayaks. Pairs will be issued a pass to drive down Century Dr.
TEAMS:
Teams consist of three to seven members (one for each of five legs, with two in canoe leg).
COED TEAMS:
Must include at least one female or one male.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
BUSINESS AND SERVICE CLUB TEAMS:

All members of a business team must be employed by that business and must appear on the regular payroll account.

 
All service clubs must be nonprofit groups dedicated to performing a service for the community. No age or sex divisions. Unicel will award $500 to the winning team's choice of charity.
HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS:
Each team member must be from the same high school. More than one team is allowed from a school. No age or sex divisions. $500 awarded from Pepsi to the local high school with the fastest team.
MUNICIPAL TEAMS:
Members must work for city county or state departments. No age or sex divisions.
FAMILY TEAMS:
All members must belong to same family by either birth or marriage. No age or sex divisions.  Must be 2+ generations to qualify for the Terry Bomynge Award.
OPEN:
No age or sex divisions. Tandem bikes and two man kayaks allowed.  

CHALLENGED TEAMS
Teams consist of a combination of persons with and without mental  or developmental disabilities. At least three legs must be completed by persons who are developmentally challenged (can include canoe leg if 1 person of a 2 person team is developmentally challenged). No age or sex divisions.
